New Product for Apple

I experiment with a lot of new technologies.  Recently I picked up a new Microsoft Surface Book.  I like what Microsoft is thinking but there are a few things that I wish would change.  First it would be nice if the screen/tablet had a video out port on it.  The keyboard part of the unit has a video out port but not the tablet.  So if I take just the screen to a presentation room I have no way to connect it to the presentation system.  I am also trying to get comfortable using just the screen without the keyboard since my thought process is that the only reason to buy a device like this is that the user intends to use the screen separated from the keyboard.  As I do this, I struggle with using Windows 10 without a physical keyboard.  Maybe it’s just me but I find iOS so much simpler to use on a tablet.  This caused me to think about why doesn’t Apple make a device like this.  Maybe they could use an iPad as the screen for a Macbook.  When the iPad is connected to the Macbook keyboard it uses the iPad for nothing more than the Macbook screen.  Maybe it can dual charge both batteries, etc.  When you detach the iPad from the Macbook keyboard is when the magic happens 🙂  The iPad displays iOS and Mac OS on the keyboard goes to “sleep” or shuts down, whatever the user wishes it to do.  I would think if this is possible it would be a great competitor to the Surface Book.

Suggestions for Apple

I have been using Windows PCs since the late 80s, early 90s but I really like my iPhone and iPad. As a CIO I have the opportunity to look at a lot of different technologies and I find things I like and dislike. Recently I have stumbled on a couple of things on my Apple devices that I wish, was just better.
The first is app updates. Why cannot my iPhone and iPads just install app updates. I know some people prefer to specify when their apps get installed because the “upgrade” might not be as good as the current version, but is that the majority? I also believe users want to download apps when connected to WiFi and not use cellular data but that would seem pretty easy to work around. In fact with the Do Not Disturb feature, cannot my iPhone just check for that to be on and see if its connected to WiFi and power, and if so, download and install app updates? After the process is done the user could get an email or a notification of what was done and the new features with the new apps. OS updates might need to be handled differently.

Another wish I have is an improvement to the badge app icon. I believe that is the little number that appears when an app has something new such as new mail. I have multiple idevices and it would be great if this notification synced between them. I believe email and calendar does for the most part, depending on how mail is being retrieved but I have many apps that do not synch. It is annoying to check an app to only discover I have taken care of the new item on a different device. I am not sure if this is an iOS or app issue or maybe even both.

This last one I wrote Leo Laporte about some time ago and he agreed with me 🙂  Why can I not back up my iPhones and iPads to my Airport Extreme Time Capsule???  I send my iMac and Macbooks to the Extreme but would love to use the Extreme as my own personal iCloud for pictures, videos, etc.
